Most people on TikTok spend their time in the For You feed, which picks videos for each viewer whether or not they follow the account that posted them. Following someone mainly puts their videos in the separate Following tab, which most people open far less often. That is why accounts with a few hundred followers regularly post videos that reach hundreds of thousands of people, and why a large following is no guarantee the next upload will travel. If reach is the goal, the video does that work, not the count.
Where a TikTok Follower Count Does Matter
Your profile, first. When a video does well, a share of its viewers tap your name to see what else you have posted, and the Followers figure is one of the three numbers at the top of the page. A count in single digits tells them the account is brand new; a few hundred tells them other people decided to stay. Then the feature gates. Going LIVE requires being 18 or over, and TikTok has generally asked for around 1,000 followers as well, though it tests different minimums in different places.
